A Method to Spatially Localize and Amplify Biomarker Levels, in the Blood or Other Biological Fluids by Applying External Energy Sources

Stanford researchers have developed a novel method in which a form of external energy is utilized to increase biomarker levels within tissue for improved detection. For example, ultrasound can be used to “shake” the biomarkers located within tissue (spatially localized by anatomic imaging), to free them to circulate, while at the same time making the vessel walls more permeable to foster the biomarkers movement into the bloodstream or other biological fluids. Thus, previously undetectable biomarkers will now be accessible to blood sampling, and current markers that are unreliably sampled due to signal to noise limitations will be much more robustly sampled.
