To complicate matters, nurse Karen Martin had overheard Larry and Ted arguing over Meredith, and Larry threatening Ted. Jake Martin

Since the character's on-screen birth in 1979, he has been portrayed by several actors, most recently by Ricky Paull Goldin, who took over the role on April 30, 2008 until the series finale on September 23, 2011. Jake, originally known as Joey, was the late-in-life son born to Dr. Joe Martin and his second wife, Ruth, a nurse. He grew up a good kid and as a young adult, fell in love with Emily Ann Sago, the daughter of reformed prostitute Estelle LaTour. Although the two married against Joe's and Ruth's wishes, their love wasn't meant to last. Emily Ann became pregnant shortly after they married but later miscarried the child. When Emily Ann discovered that sadistic pimp Billy Clyde Tuggle was actually her birth father, she became mentally unhinged. After trying to help her the best he could, Joey divorced her after she was institutionalized. Soon after, Joey left for medical school in 1991. Joey returned to Pine Valley in 1996, now known as Jake. Having dropped out of medical school, he became a handyman. He married Gillian Andrassy in 2000 and the two were

    Erica Kane

Erica Kane is a fictional character from the American daytime drama All My Children. The character was portrayed by actress Susan Lucci from the show's January 1970 debut until the last broadcast television episode aired in September 2011. In the US, Erica is considered to be the most popular character in soap opera history. Regarding the North-American market, TV Guide calls her "unequivocally the most famous soap opera character in the history of daytime TV". Agnes Nixon created Erica Kane in the 1960s as a part of the story bible for All My Children, a light-hearted soap opera that focused on social issues and young love. Nixon unsuccessfully attempted to sell the series to NBC, then to CBS, and once again to NBC through Procter & Gamble. With Procter & Gamble unable to make room for the new series in its line up, she put All My Children on hold. Nixon became head writer of Another World where she used the model of the Erica character to create a brand new character named Rachel Davis (originated by Robin Strasser, who later plays Dorian on Nixon's One Life to Live). Nixon said Rachel was Erica's "precursor to the public" but Rachel was a lower-class version. She detailed

The revelation was a major shock to viewers, and the series was boycotted by several Southern affiliates. Nevertheless, the controversy attracted much attention and ratings shot up for the then-fledgling soap. African American Sadie Gray (Lillian Hayman) lived in an apartment next door to the Wolek family and worked as the manager of housekeeping for Llanview Hospital. In the beginning, Opal was only supposed to remain on All My Children for about six weeks. But when the show's executives saw Dorothy Lyman's electric portrayal of the character, the writers kept her on and wrote for her more and more. "I have a true collaboration with Agnes Nixon (AMC's creator)", says Lyman between. "The writers write for me, but a lot of Opal's impulses come from me. I think what people like about Opal is that they don't know what to expect from her. There's a kind of danger to her." — Dorothy Lyman The producers of the show disagreed with the way Lyman portrayed Opal: "When I was hired last winter, 'they' kept calling me in every week, telling me to change my act or I'd be fired", says Lyman, referring to The Powers That Be. Those stories included popular romances with Susan Lucci's Erica Kane and Finola Hughes's Alexandra Devane Marick as well as a loving yet antagonistic fraternal relationship with John Callahan's Edmund Grey.
