Across the Universe - the Beatles

Off of their final studio album, Let It Be, Across the Universe is probably the most beautiful song ever written. Apparently, John wrote it after his first wife was mouthing off at him. Strange origins considering the nature of the song. Yesterday, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Come Together and Octopus' Garden are all up there as some of my favourite Beatles songs (among many, many others), but for me, Across the Universe is the closest they've come to audio perfection.

Can't Tell Me Nothing - Kanye West

"Wait 'till I get my money right." Kanye deserves his own list. Kanye deserves his own genre. Kanye deserves his own planet. All hail Yeezus.

In all seriousness, if you love or hate him, give this song a listen, it's pretty good.

One More Time - Daft Punk

    This. Fucking. Song.

I'm sure everybody's had that feeling. Well I get it every time I hear Romanthony's voice autotuned to all hell in Daft Punk's French House masterpiece: One More Time. My feel-good song for the ages, this song will play at my wedding and funeral as well as every other notable occasion in my life, or whenever I feel like smiling.

    Cecilia - Simon and Garfunkel

Don't get me wrong, The Sound of SilenceMrs Robinson and For Emily could all have been here, but there's just something about Cecilia that makes me thankful for the gift of hearing.

    Ms Jackson - Outkast

I've never experienced an ex's disdainful mother, but this song makes me feel sorry for those who have. Beautifully written and performed. Can I just listen to this song "forever-ever"?

Red House - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

I could probably have nothing but Hendrix on this list, but for the sake of diversity, that is not the case. Red House is definitely in my Top 2 favourite Hendrix songs, possibly for the sole reason of the ending line: "'Cause if my baby don't love me no more, I know her sister will."

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

Most would agree that this is one of the best songs ever made. So would I. Lyrics are brilliant, instrumental is brilliant, Rob Plant had great hair, what else do you need to know?

The King of Carrot Flowers (Part 1 - 3) - Neutral Milk Hotel

The darling of internet music nerds and hipsters alike, Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea opens with these two songs (Parts 1 and 2 - 3 respectively). I couldn't pick just one because the three parts (two songs) just flow so well into each other. With lyrics like: "And this is the room one afternoon I knew I could love you, and from above you how I sank into your soul, into that secret place where no one dares to go", I couldn't help but love it.

War - Bob Marley and the Wailers

The entire song is Bob Marley singing out a speech made by Haile Selassie I. It is done brilliantly and naturally as only Robert Nesta Marley could have. "Until the colour of a man's skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes - me say war."
