    RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg

RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg is the main television channel in Luxembourg, broadcasting in Luxembourgish. The small television market in Luxembourg led to a unique system in Europe: Luxembourg remains the only country in the world to run television stations in both the PAL and SECAM formats. Originally, both channels carried the same signal- Tele Luxembourg. Later, the signals were split in the two independent stations RTL-TVI (PAL, system G, on channel 27, the "i" stand for independent), targeting the French-speaking part of Belgium and RTL Télévision (SECAM, system L, on channel 21), targeting France. Both stations initially continued to carry a lot of the same programming, with regards to foreign series and movies, but produced news and game shows for their target audience. As restrictions on operating commercial television stations in Europe were relaxed in the mid-1980s, RTL-TVI moved entirely to Brussels, while the popularity of RTL Télévision was somewhat diminished by the success of M6. RTL Télévision was renamed RTL 9 and, even though its original terrestrial frequency in Luxembourg remains, it is now primarily a cable station for France. In 1984, German language RTL Plus (now RTL

    Florida's News Channel

Florida's News Channel was a regional cable news television channel seen on selected cable systems (mainly those owned by Comcast) in September 1998. It originated from Florida's state capitol, Tallahassee, Florida, at studios remodelled from a former movie theater. The network was run by Mike Vasilinda. The network used a rolling 24-hour news format with some special shows such as the Mike Vasilinda report. The station relied on a virtual, chromakey-based set, which can be used to represent FNC's "bureaus" in various parts of Florida—all from its Tallahassee home base. Jerry Nolan, an award winning videographer worked for FNC out of the Tampa WFLA office in 2000-2001 before being laid off (Thank God)! Follow "Jerry Nolan's Getting Away" on facebook! The network folded in 2003, as FNC's funds dried out, and they were unable to get carriage on major cable systems in the state's largest markets, especially on Bright House systems in Tampa Bay (Bay News 9) and Orlando (Central Florida News 13). Even Comcast's Sarasota system had their own news channel, SNN6. Today, FNC's former studios is now used for a local CBS affiliate, WCTV. Florida's News Channel was owned and run by Bob

    MTV

    • Network: MTV Networks
MTV, originally an initialism of Music Television, is an American cable television channel based in New York City that launched on August 1, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs. Today, MTV primarily broadcasts a variety of reality and scripted television programs targeted at adolescents and young adults. MTV has spawned numerous sister channels in the U.S. and affiliated channels internationally, some of which have gone independent. MTV's influence on its audience, including issues related to censorship and social activism, has been a subject of debate for years. Pittman's boss, WASEC Executive Vice President John Lack, had shepherded PopClips, a TV series created by former Monkee-turned solo artist Michael Nesmith, whose attention had turned to the music video format by the late 1970s. The inspiration for PopClips came from a similar program on New Zealand's TVNZ network, Radio with Pictures, which premiered in 1976. The concept itself had been in the works since 1966, when major record companies began supplying the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation with promotional music clips to play on the air at no charge.

This majority-Catholic ownership pushed TVI's programming in the direction of Christian values. In the first years of its existence, TVI assumed the role of an 'alternative' television broadcaster, dedicating segments of its airtime to distinct target audiences, with part of the morning dedicated to housewives and the elderly and part of the afternoon to the young. From 1998 to 2002, Cablevision had a monopoly on all local professional sports franchises in the New York City market, participating in many unfair business practices like moving games to their MSG Metro Channels with limited distribution. In 2002, the New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets broke the monopoly by starting the YES Network for their games, leaving the Mets in the Cablevision fold until their contract expired in 2005. Other FSN networks also received their local sports reports from the Atlanta studios, often with the same hosts (Terry Chick being the most prominent). The Southern Sports Report was discontinued in 2005, and FSN South produced a similar program, Around The South, that focuses on sports stories in and across the region. It has been replaced by FSN Final Score. Ironically, Fox Sports South's original name SportSouth is now the name of its sister network.

    Ha!

    Ha!

Ha!: The TV Comedy Network, owned by Viacom, was one of the first American all-comedy channels available to basic cable subscribers. Launched on April 1, 1990 at 7 p.m. ET, it competed with another startup comedy-oriented cable channel, HBO-owned The Comedy Channel (now Comedy Central). Unlike The Comedy Channel, which focused on stand-up comedy specials and clips of classic comedy feature films, Ha!'s programming centered largely on acquired off-network situation comedies from the 1950s to the 1970s. Some cable providers, particularly those owned by Viacom or Cablevision, carried the channel under a channel-share agreement in which it would be aired on the same channel space as fellow Viacom-owned cable network VH1; Ha! would air for half of the day, with the channel turning over to VH1 afterward. In 1990, Ha! and Comedy Channel agreed to merge to create CTV: The Comedy Network, which began airing on April 1, 1991; prior to the merger, both channels each had fewer than 10 million subscribers. Because of confusion and possible legal issues with the Canadian-based CTV network, the name of the network was subsequently changed to Comedy Central, a name created by Bill Burnett

ESPN was also being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department due to "warehousing" of college games from certain conferences, or signing a deal with a conference for all their games, but only televising a small number and not allowing the conference to make other arrangements for TV broadcasts. ESPN and XOS Technologies signed a partnership for college athletics websites to compete directly with CSTV's growing internet presence. LAB HD was a three-year experiment by Voom HD Networks. It is the only channel in history devoted to video art and experimental film as a continuous flow of ambient television. While it is no longer broadcasting, the channel persists as Voom HD Lab, an outreach effort on the part of its parent company, and it continues to commission pieces from artists and filmmakers. Voom launched as a DBS (direct broadcast satellite) service in the United States in October 2003. The service offered 21 channels of high-definition video focused on niche audiences. Most of the channels were conventional offerings, but one slot was reserved for an experimental channel called MOOV HD. The channel was produced by Concrete Pictures, a design and production house in Philadelphia founded by Jeff Boortz. The intent was to produce video art for public consumption. The branding of the channel was elegant, but the content was of uneven quality, and it was derided as “the screensaver channel.” Voom assigned Ali Hossaini to serve as executive producer of the channel. He began revamping the programming with high profile productions, notably a series of “video portraits” directed by Robert Wilson and produced by

    BIG Game TV!

Big Game TV (stylised as BIG Game TV!) was a live phone-in quiz channel that was broadcast via Sky Broadcasting in 2005. It released a spin-off, The Hallmark Channel Quiz on 6 March 2006, which was shown on The Hallmark Channel. The show used only three of the presenters. Big Game TV Productions added The Daily Quiz! 13 March 2006. This show aired on ITV Play and on Men & Motors seven days a week and featured a selection of Big Game TV's presenters. ITV ended their involvement with Big Game TV due to fraud allegations in May 2006. Big Game TV was the subject of a City of London Police investigation brought by the BBC Radio 4 programme You and Yours in May 2006 over allegations that receptionists were told to ignore all incoming calls for long periods of time while 150-200 calls per minute were charged 75p each. The channel was later called before a parliamentary committee. After investigating, the City of London Police said no charges would be brought against the channel. NTL removed the channel from their channel line-up on 7 June. The channel closed down entirely after leaving Sky in early 2007, after some bad press for the call-TV industry.

Debate persisted throughout the 1960s of launching a second Swedish television channel was discussed. Some wanted the new channel to be private and funded by advertising, but it was decided that Sveriges Radio would operate the second channel and that it would be funded by the license fee as well. TV2 began broadcasting on 5 December 1969, an event known as the "channel split" (kanalklyvningen). While TV1 was broadcast on VHF frequencies, TV2 used UHF frequencies, which meant that households had to buy a special converter box if they wanted to see TV2. The use of UHF frequencies also allowed TV2 to broadcast different programmes for different parts of the country, leading to the start Sydnytt, the first regional news programme, in 1970. Although TV1 and TV2 were part of the same company, they were editorially independent and supposed to compete with each other. The two channels did however eventually agreed not to compete directly with each other with similar programmes in the same time

MTV Brasil is the Brazilian version of MTV, owned by Abril Mídia, the nation's largest magazine publisher, under license from Viacom - owned MTV Networks Latin America. MTV Brasil is one of four versions of MTV available in free-to-air terrestrial television. (The other three are MTV Italy, MTV Greece and MTV Spain) However, it is also available on cable and satellite services. MTV Brasil was launched on 20 October 1990, only to metropolitan São Paulo, through UHF channel A32 and metropolitan Rio de Janeiro, through VHF channel A9 (with TV Corcovado as an affiliate station). The first video shown was Garota de Ipanema, sung by Marina Lima. In 1996, Viacom acquired 50% of the network, which was, until then, a wholly owned subsidiary of Abril. In 2005, due to regulatory requirements that non-Brazilian companies can own only up to 30% of a terrestrial network, Abril acquired 20% of MTV Brasil from Viacom. In late 2006 MTV Brasil released its broadband channel following the international model for the MTV Overdrive. In 2 December 2007, after the official start of commercial HDTV broadcasts in Brazil, MTV launched MTV HD, a simulcast of the main MTV service, featuring original

The little wave in the logo hearkens back to that time. The name Veronica is a derivation of the abbreviation VRON (Vrije Radio Omroep Nederland / Free Radio Broadcasting station Netherlands). After the pirate-activities became legally impossible (31 August 1974), Veronica transformed itself into the Veronica Association, enabling it to gain a legal radio and television license within the Public broadcasting system. ESPN on ABC

    • Network: ESPN
ESPN on ABC (formerly known as ABC Sports) is the brand used for sports programming on the ABC television network. Officially the broadcast network retains its own sports division; however, for all practical purposes, ABC's sports division has been merged with ESPN, a sports cable network majority-owned by ABC's parent, The Walt Disney Company. ABC broadcasts use ESPN's production and announcing staff, and incorporate elements such as ESPN-branded on-screen graphics, SportsCenter in-game updates, and the BottomLine ticker. The ABC logo is used for the digital on-screen graphic in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, and is also used for promotions so that viewers will know to tune into the broadcast network and not the ESPN cable channel. Prior to September 2, 2006, the broadcast network's coverage carried the ABC Sports brand, although integration of ABC's sports division with ESPN had begun a decade earlier. The branding change was made to better orient ESPN viewers with the programming on ABC and provide consistent branding for all sports broadcasts on Disney-owned channels (shortly thereafter, ESPN2's in-game graphics were likewise changed to refer simply to "ESPN").

Turner Network Television (TNT) is an American cable television channel created by media mogul Ted Turner and currently owned by the Turner Broadcasting System division of Time Warner that airs a variety of shows, with a focus on dramatic programming. Since 2007, TNT has re-launched local versions of the channel in Spain, Germany, Turkey and Belgium with more European countries in the pipeline. TNT, as a cable service, was launched with a showing of the 1939 classic movie Gone with the Wind (to which Ted Turner had acquired the rights), on October 3, 1988. It was chosen because, it was said, it was Turner's favorite movie – it would also be the first program on sister channel Turner Classic Movies in 1994. Incidentally, the film was premiered in Atlanta, Turner's hometown and the headquarters of Turner Broadcasting, and was the setting for Gone With the Wind. TNT was, at least initially, a vehicle for older movies and television shows, but slowly began to add original programming and newer reruns. When TNT began broadcasting pre-1986 MGM films, it caused a controversy when they began colorizing many black and white classics. In 1990, it obtained partial rights to the Sunday Night

The Z Channel was one of the first pay cable stations in the United States. Launched in 1974 from Los Angeles, California, this station was known for its devotion to the art of cinema due to the eclectic choice of films by the programming chief, Jerry Harvey. It also popularized the use of letterboxing on television, as well as showing 'director's cut' versions of films (which is a term popularized after Z Channel's showing of Heaven's Gate). Z Channel's devotion to cinema and choice of rare and important films had an important influence on such directors as Robert Altman, Quentin Tarantino, and Jim Jarmusch. Z Channel was owned by Theta Cable (a division of TelePrompTer Corporation) which was acquired by Group W (Westinghouse) in 1981. Operations were located at the intersection of Stanford St. and Nebraska Ave. in Santa Monica, California. In 1989, Z Channel faded to black and was replaced by SportsChannel Los Angeles. Spectrum

Spectrum was a subscription TV channel in the Chicago area that existed in the early 1980s. It was a direct competitor to ON-TV and operated in the same way. It was owned and operated by United Cable. Subscribers were required to purchase a descrambler box for their TV set and pay a monthly fee. The signal broadcast on UHF channel 66 (WFBN, now WGBO). Spectrum aired a combination of sporting events and movies, all commercial free. United Cable intended Spectrum as a way to penetrate the Chicago market as the city of Chicago was not wired for cable TV until the mid 1980s. Ultimately, Spectrum was unsuccessful. They encountered technical issues with their broadcast signal because WFBN 66's signal transmitter on the John Hancock Center only transmitted to the east antenna mast. This seriously hampered Spectrum's ability to reach viewers to the west of the tower. By 1983, in the face of cable TV entering the Chicago market and the economic recession, Spectrum went out of business the following year and sold its subscriber list to competitor ON-TV. By mid-1985, ON-TV was also out of business, and its broadcast UHF channel (WSNS 44) would eventually be affiliated with Univision and later

The loop repeats three times a day, starting at 6 am Eastern, and then resetting at 2 pm and 10 pm. When MTV Hits launched in 2002, programming consisted of non-stop music videos. As with MTV Jams, the network was named the same way, for a daily program called MTV Hits that was MTV's main pop music video program. The network consisted of current hit music videos, along with a few older videos from earlier in the year, as well as a few from the late 1990s. The network was commercial free, with the exception of internal promotions for MTV and MTV-branded properties. DR2 is a Danish television station. It is part of Danmarks Radio, the public service broadcasting company of Denmark. It was launched in 1996 as a satellite-/cable-only channel. This was highly controversial at the time, as it was considered close to a breach of public service principles that the new station did not reach all viewers. Adding to the critics' cause was the fact that DR did in fact have broadband spectrum available for terrestrial broadcasts. However, this was being reserved for digital broadcasting tests. The less-than-100%-coverage coupled with a "highbrow" reputation resulted in low ratings which in turn earned it the nickname "the secret channel" to the regret of the director general who had been pushing the line "my channel" (in the sense of programmes appealing to individuals, not the whole family as DR1 supposedly). This was finally remedied on March 31, 2006 when terrestrial digital broadcasts started. It most resembles the British BBC Four in that its main output is experimental comedy, documentaries and in-depth news programmes. It has earned much praise for high quality shows, especially in the first category, with series like Casper & Mandrilaftalen and

Unlike BBC World Service, it was not funded by the British government with a grant-in-aid; instead, it was funded by commercial advertising. Commercials were inserted locally by the cable or satellite providers. In the years that followed, the BBC would insert news headlines and other updates to fill the gaps, known as the break fillers. In Europe, BBC WSTV replaced BBC TV Europe on 11 March 1991 as the BBC's subscription-funded entertainment service. Like BBC TV Europe, it was a mix of BBC1 and BBC2, but showed specially commissioned World Service News bulletins in place of the BBC's domestic ones.
