    • Cup: Star
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

This isn't the first time Mario Kart has done a course in the style of "Once Around - Three Sections", but it's arguably the best. The downhill momentum is palpable and the music for seperate sections really gives an epic feel to the course that traditional "three loop" courses lack. Here's hoping for many, many more courses like this in the future. I mean, you drive over a damn dam! (Sorry, had to)

    N64 Rainbow Road

    N64 Rainbow Road

    • Cup: Lightning
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 64

This course is possibly Nintendo's best visual achievement to date. The amazingly rendered course swirling around fireworks and stars with the item-throwing train riding alongside the course over the absolutely beautiful city below. Played in order, this is the last track most players will play and rightfully so, as this version just like the original is the perfect victory lap for a wonderful game.

You drive through a thundercloud. You drive on a massive floating beanstalk to a Super Mario Bros. 3 style Airship to a damn thundercloud. It's the coolest thing. It's so cool. You know that awful Thunder Cloud item you always hated getting in Mario Kart Wii? Well he's grown up, and this is his revenge.

    Bowser's Castle

    • Cup: Special
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

Most "Bowser's Castle" courses are tough enough as it is, what with the fire and the boulders and the fire and/or lasers trying to get at you. But then you get to the center of the castle and towering out of a pool of lava is a giant stone golem of Bowser literally punching down onto the course, and by the time you register what you're looking at you've already made a choice as to which way you're going on that split, and whether or not you're getting a fistful of stone.

    DS Tick Tock Clock

    • Cup: Lightning
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart DS

A Steampunk's favorite course, this gaggle of gears and pendulums gives the claustrophobic feel that made the original MK64 level so paranoid and fast-paced.

    Sunshine Airport

This course does not squander its unique setting. You drive under airplanes, through airplanes, alongside airplanes. Long stretches of road emulating a runway, even a quick-finish shortcut through baggage claim. Be sure to equip your Cloud Gliders for a nice matching aeshetic.

    N64 Royal Raceway

    • Cup: Banana
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 64

No amount of cherry blossom leaves will make up for that fact that you can no longer just ignore that you're in a race that drive down to Peach's Castle like you could in the original N64 version. It's a nice track and all, but still. They took out the best part.

    Shy Guy Falls

    • Cup: Flower

This winding, sensational track throws racers up, down, even all around! There are few things in the game more visceral than watching droplets of water form on your screen whilst propelling up the speed boosts on the waterfall.

    N64 Yoshi Park

    N64 Yoshi Park

    • Cup: Leaf
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 64

One of the most notorious courses from MK64, this labyrinth of routes has never looked better and is just as disorienting as the original. The empty, blank pasture at the beginning is souped up and the whole course is made all the more intimidating with the level of detail going into each specific collection of roads.

    Toad Harbor

    Toad Harbor

    • Cup: Flower
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

This course, reminiscent of San Francisco, is a course of multiple branching roadways and requires its drivers to be constantly on guard due to the regular trolleys. However, these things take away from the gorgeous scenery, the detailed housing units, and one might race this course a thousand times without seeing the Peach of Liberty in the bay.

    3DS DK Jungle

The ambience of this course just feels mysterious. This overgrown jungle temple lets us  floy onto and over a bouncing flower, drive past giant shrines and under a massive golden banana. Pretty solid.

    Thwomp Ruins

This compact course provides plenty of opprotunites for conflict. A green, overgrown answer to Ruins of mario kart's past, between the thwomps and the rolling cogs you're bound to get thrown off your game at least once a lap. Watch out for those shortcuts jumps!

    Rainbow Road

    Rainbow Road

    • Cup: Special
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

The space station sci-fi Sandra Bullock starring in "Gravity" vibe of the lastest member of the Rainbow Road family kind of takes away from the magic associated with the course, but it's still a fun, thrilling trip through space, and arguably one of the prettiest looking courses designed for the series yet.

    Bone Dry Dunes

This swervy, curvy course has a lot of ways to trip you up. Dry Bones stumblr across the course, skeletal Pirhana Plants threaten to bite you off your past on multiple occasions, and plenty of holes you drive yourself into.

    Mario Circuit

    Mario Circuit

    • Cup: Flower
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

This simple course shows off the familiar setting of mushroom kingdom, while acting almost as a replica of Mario Kart 8's mobius strip logo. Almost half of the course occurs upside-down, giving a new perspective on this familiar world.

    Electrodome

If Daft Punk was a Mario Kart course, they'd be Electrodome. Driving through this thumping discotheque has an almost Tron-like feel to it. Watching those Koopas and Shy Guys bounce along in the background is also incredibly entertaining.

    3DS Piranha Plant Slide

    3DS Piranha Plant Slide

This fast-paced, tighly organized track features sharp turns and visually impressive underwater segments. It also has A LOT of plants trying to eat you, so watch out for those I guess.

    SNES Donut Plains 3

    SNES Donut Plains 3

    • Cup: Banana
    • First Appearance: Super Mario Kart

Why is it called Donut Plains? Are "donuts" what they call the hole that the moles pop out of? That's the only thing I can think of. Regardless, the only SNES track in the game is a nice throwback to its roots, and spices up the proceeding by making underwater driving a more essential part of the course. It's a quick course that boasts some nice wet ground graphics and colorful borders.

    Wii Moo Moo Meadows

    Wii Moo Moo Meadows

    • Cup: Shell
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart Wii

Any level in any video game that requires you to think "Better watch out for those cows!" is a winner in my book. This level is also one of the best examples of the graphical jump Nintendo made from the Wii to the Wii U.

    GBA Mario Circuit

    GBA Mario Circuit

    • Cup: Shell
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart: Super Circuit

If Moo Moo Meadows was a display of the graphical improvements of the Wii U, than GBA Mario Circuit is a display of how much some design tweaks can change a course. While still being technically the same, that lofty anti-grav turn along with the details lining the track make this a far cry form the GBA version.

    Twisted Mansion

    Twisted Mansion

    • Cup: Flower
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

It's not called "Twisted Mansion" mansion for nothing. Most of the racing is done on the walls, even diverging at one point underwater to race both over AND under your opponents. A haunted house level in the tradition of Banshee Boardwalk, Boos plagues the halls of the mansion, even taking control of some empty armor to try and chop you up!

    DS Cheep Cheep Beach

    • Cup: Shell
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart DS

Cheep Cheep Beach is a quick course, but it's a visual treat seeing this Island pass by. From the water-jumps to the boardwalk and the just perfect amount of obstacles without being obnoxiously overloaded with crabs make this a nice, if unexceptional, track.

    Wii Grumble Volcano

Grumble Volcano is already a tense course on its first lap, with harsh colors steppin' on yr vibe and lots of sharp turns with the constant threat of lava, but then the course starts FALLING APART so that's pretty scary.

    Dolphin Shoals

    Dolphin Shoals

    • Cup: Star
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

Arguably the best "water" course in the game, this track has you jumping through hoops WITH DOLPHINS and DRIVING through a WHIRLPOOL on top of what I can only assume is that freaky eel from Super Mario 64 and SHOW HIM/HER WHO'S BOSS.

    Mario Kart Stadium

    Mario Kart Stadium

    • Cup: Mushroom
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

Mario Kart Stadium is likely the first course most everyone will play when they boot up Mario Kart 8: And it looks awesome. It's a simple course that shows off just a bit of MK8's strengths. Easy drifting curves, a solid hang-glide jump, and of course Anti-Gravity. A souped up intro circut for a souped up game.

    Water Park

    Water Park

    • Cup: Mushroom
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

Water Park lives up to its amusement park premise by offering an exciting, varied track. It's a shame to have to drive by so fast because there's a lot going on: A variety of amusement rides go by in a blur while you traverse the Sub Coaster, swiping by the wheels of the ridecars that go above you to get a speed on the anti-grav portion of the track.

    Sweet Sweet Kingdom

    Sweet Sweet Kingdom

    • Cup: Mushroom
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 8

Almost definately influenced by the "Sugar Rush" arcade game from Disney's Wreck-It Ralph, this course obviously wanted its name to be "Candy Kingdom", but Adventure Time beat them to the punch. You drive on candy cane roads an through donut holes, while soda geysers bubble when you drive through the soda lake while a caramel waterfall falls from the cake tower in the distance as the gingerbreadmen cheer you on.

    N64 Toad's Turnpike

    N64 Toad's Turnpike

    • Cup: Shell
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart 64

It can be said for most of MK8's exceptional retro revisions, but this one especially lends itself to the phrase "It's hard to believe this is the same course." Driving on the walls and propelling oneself from ramp-adorned vehicles never even crossed the minds of those who were swerving through traffic in the original, but now Karters have a detailed, immersive loop of a highway (where are all these cars going, anyway? Where's the exit ramp?) to bounce around on, and it's buckets of fun.

    GCN Dry Dry Desert

    GCN Dry Dry Desert

    • Cup: Banana
    • First Appearance: Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

This track, inspired by the Dry Dry Desert of the N64 Paper Mario, almost makes the prospect of treking through the desert appealing, aside from the giant quicksand pit and Pokeys. But that Oasis looks pretty nice though, right?
